With the new WNBA season upcoming, the WNBA teams are in re-signing mode.  The Washington Mystics signed all-star guard Alana Beard to a new four year contract.  Beard has been a huge impact on the Mystics since her rookie season, where she led the team to the playoffs, and re-signing to a long term contract is a big boost.

The Detroit Shock also re-signed Pienette Pierson, the teams second leading scorer last season, and the 2007 WNBA 6th Women of the Year, to a new contract.

The WNBA draft will be held the day after the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships, on April 9th.  It will be in Palm Harbor, Florida.

First of all, I want to apologize for the website downtime. We had severe server issues, but are back up and running now. The NBA betting site is still going strong, as we continue to make money all year round on basketball!

The Indiana Fever were given some great news over the past 24 hours, when their franchise player Tamika Catchings signed a contract extension. Catchings was the highest paid player in the WNBA last season, and has signed until 2011. Fever also signed all-star guard Katie Douglas from Connecticut recently, which most likely helped in the decision.

The WNBA board have aproved the sale of the Seattle Storm to four Seattle based women. The women are longtime Storm season-ticket holders Anne Levinson, Lisa Brummel, Ginny Gilder and Dawn Trudeau. Storm will be playing its home games at KeyArena through 2010. It cost approximately $10,000,000 to purchase the Storm.

WNBA News for December 19, 2007

Lindsey Harding, last years WNBA #1 overall draft pick and current guard for the Minnesota Lynx, may be on the love.  Harding grew up watching the Houston Comets, and is hinting that she would like to be traded there.  In related news, Hardings high school jersey was retired this week.

Erin Phillips may be able to play this season for the Connecticut Sun.  She missed last season to a knee injury, and was planning to bypass this year to secure a spot for herself in the 2008 olympics, but there is a good chance she will be able to do both.

The Indiana Fever have appointed Lin Dunn as the new head coach.

WNBA News for December 6, 2007

SeattlePI columnist Jim Moore wrote an interesting article suggesting the Seattle Storm name Dennis Rodman as their head coach.  He feels that Rodman would attract a lot of new fans to the WNBA and Seattle in particular, due to his novelty act and obvious famous name.

I’ve got mixed feelings on the issue.  Part of me likes the idea, because it’s something that will obviously get a lot of PR and see a lot more people tune into WNBA games – at least on the short term.  It would get a lot of press nationwide, and help put the WNBA on the map.

The problems however is that Rodman isn’t exactly qualified – he has no real experience in this regard.  Is it worth hiring a head coach with no experience, just to get some press?  Furthermore it would take away from the legitimacy of the WNBA, by hiring Rodman purely as a marketing move, and reminds me of the old US soccer league, which became a joke because of these type of players.

Regardless it’s an interesting article, and Jim brings up some good points.  You can read the full article here.

In other WNBA news, Atlanta have announced that the fans will be allowed to pick the nickname of the new WNBA franchise.  There is a shortlist of Dream, Flight, Sizzle and SurgeYou can vote here.

WNBA December 2nd News

Anne Donovan, who coached the Seattle Storm for five years and took down a WNBA Championship, surprisingly resigned this weekend.  Donovan, who still had one year remaining on a three year contract, said she wanted to take on new challenges.  This is bad news for the Storm, who are already in a major transition, with just three players currently under contract next season, and their MVP Sue Bird expected to leave.  The first name coming out for the position was Paul Westhead, current assistant coach to the Sonics.  Westhead, who coached the Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA Championship this year, quickly denied the rumours, stating that he is happy where he is, doesn’t want to leave or try and do the jobs simultaneously.

The new WNBA Atlanta Franchise announced Marynell Meadors as the General Manager and Head Coach this weekend.  Meadors has a long history of coaching, with more than 500 wins stretching through four collega and pro teams.  Meaders began her managerial career at Tennessee Tech University, where she spent 20 years.  She also coached Florida State University.  In the pro world, she coached the Charlotte Sting in 1997, 1998 and 1999, where she did a fantastic job, and is fondly remembered.

WNBA News for November 16th, 2007

If Dennis Rodman is still looking to be a WNBA coach, he’s going to have to look outside Atlanta.  The new franchise, and owner Ron Terwilliger, have said that they’d prefer to have a women’s coach, since it’s a women’s league.  I guess dressing like a woman doesn’t count?  Terwilliger is expected to announce Georgia All-American Teresa Edwards as head coach by Thanksgiving.  Edwards was the assistant coach for the Minnesota Lynx last season.

There’s no debate on the greatest WNBA player, and that’s Lauren Jackson. The Syndey Morning Herald wrote an excellent article, calling her the “Michael Jordan of Womens Basketball”.

WNBA News for November 5, 2007

With a few vacancies in the head coach roles of various WNBA teams, there are bound to be many applicants.  One of the applicants may be a but surprising however, as Dennis Rodman is interested in becoming a coach. We’ll have more on this story as it progresses.

Clay Bennett, owner of the Seattle Supersonics and Seattle Storm, has told the NBA now of his intentions to move the Sonics franchise to Oklahoma City.  However the Seattle Storm may remain in Seattle.

Connecticut Sun were given bad news, as Australian guard Erin Phillips said she will not be playing in the 2008 season.  She missed the 2007 season due to a knee injury, had made her intentions to come back for the ’08 season, but is planning to stay in Australia and fight for a spot in the Australia National Team.
